Spirit of Mayo Clinic Award
In 2008 Emeriti Staff Members Drs. Monte L. Anderson, Keith A. Kelly, and Pasquale J. Palumbo presented the plan for the Spirit of Mayo Clinic Award (SOMCA) to Dr. Richard S. Zimmerman, the then Associate Dean of Graduate Medical Education, who was immediately supportive. The Emeriti Association unanimously endorsed the concept, and the Spirit of Mayo Clinic Award Committee was formed. Administrative leaders added their enthusiastic support as well. The Emeriti Association proceeded to fund the Award with personal donations.
In October 2012 Mayo Clinic Arizona Department of Education Administration assumed responsibility of funding the award in perpetuity. The funds already donated by the Emeriti Staff support educational endeavors at the Mayo Clinic School of Medicine -- Arizona Campus.
Spirit of Mayo Clinic Award - Selection Committee Members 2024:
The SOMCA introduces the Mayo Clinic culture and professional expectations to residents. During resident orientation, SOMCA Committee members present a brief history of medicine that focuses on Drs. Charles and Will Mayo and the Mayo Clinic and uses original quotations from the Mayo brothers to illustrate the criteria for the Spirit of Mayo Clinic Award. These criteria include:
Character
Teaching Skills
Patient Care
Contributions to Research
Mayo Clinic faculty members and program directors nominate graduating residents from residency programs that are at least three years in duration. A SOMCA selection panel of MCA Emeriti Association members interview candidates and make the final selection. The past president/SOMCA Committee Chair and President present the Spirit of Mayo Clinic Award to the recipient at the MCSGME graduation ceremony.
The award consists of a framed certificate, an engraved medallion, and a monetary award.
The Emeriti Association at Mayo Clinic in Arizona is hereby dedicated to teaching the story of the Mayo Clinic and its traditions to our outstanding young trainees. During every June orientation session, we repeat Dr. Will’s wonderful reflection:
“I look through a half-opened door into the future, full of interest, intriguing beyond my power to describe but with a full understanding that it is for each generation to solve its own problems and that no man has the wisdom to guide or control the next generation.”
We add, “Ladies and gentlemen, you are the next generation. We know that each of you has outstanding potential – that’s why you’re here today. We want you to understand the traditions of this great Clinic which, as of today, you play a critical role. May your experience at Mayo always be recognized as one of the best experiences ever in your career!”
