Our speaker, Dr. David I Smith, is a science fiction afficionado who has been reading science fiction since he learned to read. He is a Professor Emeritus in the Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology, retiring after 26 years conducting research on the genetics of cancer and promoting the utilization of next generation sequencing at the Mayo Clinic.

David will discuss the history of science fiction and explore multiple intersections between science fiction and science. He will also share his own personal journey with science fiction and discuss some of his favorite science fiction stories of all time.
