Home Computer Security Alert – Malware Threat to Routers

FBI urges reboot of personal routers, network-attached storage devices

June 1, 2018
The FBI is urging users of personal routers and network-attached storage devices to reboot them as soon as possible in response to malware that has infected hundreds of thousands devices in at least 54 countries. The malware, called VPNFilter, can monitor website traffic, steal credentials and damage devices. Mayo Clinic-managed devices are continuously monitored for such malware, and Information Technology staff will perform any action necessary on those devices. This advisory is for your personally owned home router and network-attached storage devices.

Unfortunately, there is no easy way to tell if your personal device is infected by this malware. Although there are published lists of the models known to be affected, users are encouraged to perform a factory reset or, at a minimum, reboot (unplug, wait a few seconds, and plug in again) all personal routers and network-attached storage devices. As always, changing factory-default passwords will provide an additional layer of security.
