Valuable Improvements Coming To New Medicare Cards

By Neath Folger

New Medicare cards to be issued, beginning April 1

From Mayo News Center

On April 1, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) will begin mailing new Medicare cards. Note these changes on the new cards:

  • The gender of the beneficiary no longer will be displayed on the card.
  • A signature no longer will be required.
  • The beneficiary's Social Security number will be replaced with a unique Medicare number.

Mailing of the new cards will be staggered, and all new cards should be mailed by April 2019.

Below are samples of the old card at left and the new card at right:

Once the new Medicare arrive, it is important to provide the card or information on it when receiving care.  With Epic it may be possible to enter the new Medicare number through the patient portal (MyChart). It is also important to have a current address on file with the Social Security Administration.
